Mason Matcha-Misu : originally uploaded by Jackie
2 post in one day? I had to, this is the cake Jackie made me for my birthday, a matcha, pistachio and white chocolate tiramisu based on a mocha tiramisu that I make, only thing is it’s 1000′s of miles away :(
Eye candy thou, don’t you think?
Devil Girl
Feeling ok after Friday’s incident, and was back on the bike all day Saturday with Graham and caught the Zombie walk! This year was HUGE, there must have been twice as many zombies, I saw at least 4 Ash’s from Evil Dead, about 7 zombie brides and enough zombie babies (zombabies) to scare you half to death.
Two words: Zombie Midgets.
This is the first picture I’ve uploaded, there are more coming, I’ll put em on flickr if I make it home tonight.
Speaking of tonight, Naam is calling at around 7-8 cause this is the birthday weekend, thank you for your birthday wishes, the official countdown has begun, I have 364 days to get famous, get messy, and get dead before I turn 28.
The last 2 sound easy, the first one might take a while . . .
Doors of Aggression
Let me set the scene. It’s a sunny Friday afternoon and I was riding my bike along Comercial Drive heading south at about 6th-7th ave on my way home after doing some shopping (I Know! shopping?). As I approach the green light at the corner of 5th Avenue I hit a stride and pedal swiftly while remaining alert and aware, as I always do, of the traffic around me. Shoulder check the bus and FUCK! No warning, no getting out of the way. Just the cold hard van door thrown in front of you like a roadblock. My left arm crashes sickeningly into the door as my healthy speed is swiftly transformed, With amazing acrobatic grace I hit the concrete in a roll. Yay for sports! The bicycle Gods were smiling on me today. Nothing prepares you for this happening. The contant fear of it is more scary than the actual event. During the gymnastic tuck and roll I didn’t feel any pain. It’s slow motion in fast forward. It all catches up in an instant and I am there on my side in the middle of the street checking if anything is broke. Are my brains still in my head? Check. Knees still bendy? Check. Arms still attached? Check. Then the woman who just doored me is frantically asking if I am alright. I hear people on the footpath go “Woah you ok dude?” AM I ALRIGHT? Shit, I’ve barely checked if myself and you want to know if I’m alright?!?! Thankfully I am alright. A swollen, grazed and bruised forearm, grazed and bruised both knees, bruised my palms and a bit of disorientation is all the damage done to me physically (I hope). I needed to get my bike fixed thou. Bent front rim.
There is a lesson in all of this: You will eventually get doored if you ride long enough in Vancouver. The second lesson is: Fuck that woman for not looking!
Tonal Ghosts
Back to Vancouver and back to some HDR. Went to go to an Opiuo show on Friday night and got food poisoning or something and ended up going for a big ride with the camera to cool off.
Took this photo and some others thou, so not a total waste of a night . . .
Sham #3
Morning breaks, a new day wakes, I crash out on the trampoline for a few hours in the sun then head to the water to swim. It starts to rain a little in the afternoon putting a bit of a dampener on events, but Beardyman and Bassnectar are playing and can’t miss. But I did. Ahhh Jet lag sucks. I returned to the campsite to take some photos of the stars for a change of pace after seeing Beardyman (little disappointing) and during a particularly long exposure, I passed out.
I woke half in half out of my tent holding the camera, both covered in a light dew. as soon as the sun came up i got stuff ready, but all of the glass on my len was frosted and took about 1hr to dry out properly (opps) got a few misty shots on the way thou, ain’t half bad.
With my early rise I went down to the Living Room to catch the last of the dawn set and take a couple of HDR shots where I met Rojin (above) and got this (if I do say so myself) wicked shot. Finally organized a ride back to Vancouver with some randoms from the camp and got to Vancouver at 4am tuesday morning. Got to the door, no keys. sleep on steps and wait for landlord who called the police on me cause they thought I was homeless. After talking them into letting me in (I hadn’t met them til this point) I crashed into a 2 day coma, soo good.

Sham 2010 pt II
Wow, busy busy.
So after Excision we headed past the Pagoda and to The Living Room and I took a few more photos, watched some wicked lightsaber fights in the river, listened to a few more acts,
there was some good music at the beach and in the Fractal Forest, but I was developing a blister and was beginning to lose things,
first I lost my lens cap from my 18-200, then earplugs, then a bit of cash from doing handstands in the archway :(. Time to take home the camera but not before geting a few more shots downtown.
A quick stop off at the tent and then back into it, the night started to blur between 12 and 3, but around 3am we stocked up on lollypops (God I hate cherry), then went to the Hookha Tent to smoke some Shisha and hopefully catch up with Yoshi. But alas, missed connections so we stumbled home via the Trampoline. I went and hung in the dome til the wee smalls with Storm, and I assume that Fisher went exploring into the night.
More tomorrow!
Shambhala 2010
After arriving in Vancouver from London on Tuesday and making it though “extra security screening”, I got a phone, a bike and the internet set up before the jet lag set in. After a fresh start I called up Fisher to see whats going on, as you may or may not know, Mark (Fisher) is in Vancouver and some his friends from back home and myself went in on a Shambhala ticket for his birthday. Having never been he was a little apprehensive at first, but by the end of the weekend you couldn’t wipe the smile off his face
Returning to the mountains really does change you somehow, it’s like a weight is lifted, the sky is blue, the trees are green (well a lot were pine beetle orange) and the air is clean and smells delicious.
After a 9hr drive and a 5hr wait in line we got in the gate at 4am Friday morning and headed to the forest camping spot where we found the Arctic Embassy and began to set up. Still feeling the effects of jet lag and the crazy pace of the last week, as well as having only 2 hrs of sleep in the car, I was a bit of a wreck for the first day and ended up sleeping a lot just to catch up.
Awake for 7pm when Lorne B was playing in the Living Room and Ill-Esha was in The Village, I was listening to a bit of LORN before I came and thought it was the same dude, but just similar names, I was digging LORN, but Lorne B was a little undewhelming. Back to Ill-Esha in The Village and the party started pumping, SHAMBHALA! Vinyl Richie, Delhi to Dublin, Q-bert and An-ten-nae was the lineup I wanted to see, but avoiding sleep doesn’t make it go away and I crashed at about 10-11.
Fresh start in the morning, and after some serious trading at the trading post, I got out the Camera gear and headed in to town to find Yoshi and Isaac, after which I swang by the river to find it had turned green, excerpt from the Shambhala website
On the afternoon of Saturday August 7th at Shambhala, a prankster poured a green substance into the river. The substance spread quickly and afterward it was discovered as fluorescein, a harmless, non-toxic dye used in environmental testing to locate water leaks. The dye is NON-toxic, but we asked that anyone with skin allergies or sensitive skin stay out of the river until the water was completely cleared. We were in contact with the Ministry of Environment and local health authorities, and they were confident in our process.
After heading back and finding Fisher, we hung out at the Trampoline by our tent and I took a few snaps as the night built up and to get the juices flowing.
Next stop was the Village for Opiuo, Excision and Noisia, caught the end of Opiuo and and Excision was fucking awesome! Quite packed and a lot of G’s in hoodies doing the head bob, but if you had a good spot (by the waterfall man!) it was wicked, I took my camera (of course) so I’ll leave you with a few shots of Excision, I have to go out and do some shooting, will fill in the rest when I get back :)
The Green River
Just got back from Shambles, big story for next post. Top of the headlines thou, somebody put some Fluorescein in the river and it turned fluorescent green! Lucky I had my Camera on hand, Photos!
More coming after some sleep.
I’m Back!
After goodbye to London, Jackie and the boys I hopped on the plane and landed at YVR where I got the 9th degree from the border patrol, thankfully it was a young(ish) girl who saw that I was just a really nice, stand up guy and I made it through with minimal delays. Headed to my new place near 20th and Main, dropped the bags and headed straight to our community bikes the bike shop around the corner and got my new ride for $100, pretty sweet deal, caught up with Fisher and a bottle of gin before jetlag got the best of me around 10pm.
Up at 5am, flat clean bags unpacked, phone and mobile 3G internet sorted, all for a great price, and all within 24hrs. God I’m good sometimes. Then comes the shocker, the ride Fisher had “arranged” for me fell thru, but as luck would have it I found a ride within the hour and am heading up tomorrow.
So I’m here, I’m settled, I’m happy.
Should really do something about becoming more permanent . .
